Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

       -by Nardos Kifle

Obsession (n.) a persistent thought feeling that takes control of a person’s mind. We often view love as something beautiful and pure, but what happens when that same type of “love” turns into something darker?

In the novel wuthering heights by Emily Brontë love isn’t gentle or comforting. Instead, it’s destructive, intense and something that’s impossible to escape. The novel follows the complicated relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Since their childhood they have always been close but social expectations and their own pride turns their love into something painful and destructive. They shared a connection that goes beyond a normal friendship. But as they grow older the pressure from society and desire for status interferes with their relationship. Catherine Earnshaw decides to marry Edgar Linton not because she loves him but because he represents wealth and status. That decision becomes the turning point that slowly turns their once shared love for each other into bitterness, pain and revenge.

From the moment he arrives at Wuthering heights as an orphan he is treated nothing like an outsider. He was abused and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley. These experiences shaped his personality and slowly hardened him. The love he once had for Catherine gets twisted by jealousy and anger that instead of seeking happiness, he dedicates his life to revenge against all the people who wronged him.

Their love was never ordinary, from the start it was always so intense that it consumed their body and soul until it was the only thing that was left. Catherine herself seemed to understand that when she said, “He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” This line reveals that their bond goes beyond ordinary love that they were a reflection of each other, two parts of the same soul.

The novel explores the darker side of love not the side we always read about. Love is normally seen as beautiful and pure but, in this story, it becomes something consuming. Emily Brontë shows us that human emotions aren’t simple, love can exist alongside hatred just like grief can exist alongside revenge. Some emotions can be far more dangerous than we think, it reminds us that something as beautiful as love mixed with pride, jealousy and pain can turn into something destructive and toxic.
